About Dr. Kay
The Director of the American Fondouk is Dr. Gigi Kay, a British veterinarian with a multi-cultural, multi-linguistic flavour.
Dr. Kay was brought up in the Middle East, where her parents worked for the British Foreign Office, and was educated in a variety of schools with an equally diverse combination of cultures and languages. As a child she witnessed first-hand the harsh reality of life for the working animals of Africa and the Middle East, and longed to be able to help.
Many years later, after qualifying as a veterinarian from the University of Edinburgh, Dr. Kay carved out a career helping working horses and donkeys. She received her Masters degree from Cambridge and holds the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Equine Internal Medicine. She has over 15 years experience of leading teams in equine hospitals in Morocco, Egypt, Qatar, and Mali.
Prior to joining the American Fondouk, Dr. Kay worked for the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) and Animal Care Egypt (ACE).
Her goal is to provide an excellent standard of clinical care to the donkeys, mules, and horses of vulnerable owners. At the same time she aims to provide a facility for young veterinarians and students to engage in a busy equine hospital so that they in turn can go on to provide excellence in clinical care for many years to come.
Dr. Kay is an inspirational and demanding team leader, mobilizing the Fondouk staff to achieve creative solutions to difficult challenges while maintaining humor and fun. This has made her a perfect fit for the role of Director at the American Fondouk.
