About American Fondouk

The American Fondouk is a unique nonprofit organization* dedicated to providing people-to-people aid through offering free veterinary care for the hard working donkeys, mules, and horses of Morocco. Treating working animals in the developing world is considered to offer a significant contribution towards safeguarding the livelihoods of the poorest and most vulnerable members of the community, both in the towns and in the countryside.

Offering education in horse care and nutrition is also critical to improving the welfare of these animals and the welfare of the owners and their families who depend on them.

Our Mission: To better the lives of the working animals of Fez Medina and the families who depend on their labor.

*Administered by the MSPCA and managed by the American Fondouk Maintenance Committee.

About Fez Medina

Fez Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, forming part of the cultural heritage – which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value. Fez Medina has a total population of 200,000 and is the largest car-free urban area in the world.

Many of the residents of Fez rely completely on their working animals and the labor they provide. These poor families depend mainly on pack animals like donkeys, mules, and horses to carry extremely heavy loads throughout the narrow streets of the old town. But, often due to overwork or neglect, these animals suffer terribly from all types of injuries and diseases. Without the careful and dedicated work of the American Fondouk’s veterinary staff, thousands of donkeys, mules, and horses would suffer or die each year.
